With respectable precedents such as Cyrano de Bergerac and the good Baron Munchausen, imagine your heroes (and heroines) in tricorne and justaucorps on Barsoom, for instance:

As an aficionado of 'B' to 'Z' SF and 'Sword & sandal' movies since the mid 1950, I'm no prejudiced at all against low-budget movies. And Traci Lords was quite good in 'Profiler' and 'Cry Baby' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cry-Baby (with excellent 'period' music, btw) and except for the blond hair is as fitting as the Disney actress (and in slightly more Barsoomian' dresses).

Figurines-wise, the Bronze Age http://www.bronzeagemin.com/miniatures_html/32MM/SCI-FI/sci-fi28mm.htm and Tin Man http://tinminis.com/TinManCatalog.htm are perfect for Red Martians, the Parroom Station http://www.parroom.net/PSM_catalog/PSCat_catHome.htmland RAFM (inferior, uninspirational imho) ones (<=>Space 1889) can be used for another, less perfectly humanoid, species http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=193794 but for alternative 'human-looking' ones other possibilities exist: http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=135459 EDITED O7.29."12: http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=275959

look more than adequate to raise a Garde du Corps for such princess:

And YES, while egglings Red Martians may have a *navel*, marking the connection of the allantois, rather than of the placenta, with the embryo

While when discovering them most people think only 'Dark Elves / [potentially] Eldars', I needed not the be influenced by the recent Disney movie to immediately think: *Barsoom*!

Regarding the quality of the sculpting, same same origin as:

Raging Heroes intends to propose SF variants (in all likelihood why the addition of a mini-sprue of hands holding alternate weapons), but to use the Blood Vestals in an ERB-influenced Mars setting very simple conversions (substituting e.g. Dark Eldar splinter pistols to # half the swords) of the already available Fantasy ones would suffice.
EDIT: the SF Vestals are not intrinsically bad, but following the Raging Heroes policy look like 'NOT Dark Eldars'; for a Barsoomian setting they don't fit as well, and by far, as converted Fantasy ones. http://theminiaturespage.com/news/141065942/

Not totally off-topic, since dealing with that problematic Barsoomian nudity: Red Martians are egg-laying Mammals (Prototheria) and we know of such beings: our platypus and echidna. These are called 'Monotremes' (Greek for 'single hole' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monotreme) because of their cloaca. The 'intermediate' position of such would render it invisible in 'frontal nudity', and as for males their reproductive apparatus is retracted and hidden 'inside' when not in use (as for those other egg-laying higher vertebrates, birds and most of reptiles).
Meaning that totally nude Red Martians would appear as sexless as Barbie and Ken dolls – biology can be amusing, sometimes.
This… less obtrusive morphology would explain why Red Martians don't share our… prejudices regarding this peculiar area.
Of course this would not prevent children from asking questions -children are by nature curious, less prejudiced than many adults, and know perfectly at least how *themselves* are built. Thus many little girls would ask: 'Mummy, why Dejah Thoris have no. like me... huh?? :?: '. But the question would not be really embarrassing, the obvious answer being: 'But, darling, she is a MARTIAN! '.
Now, imagine John Carter's surprise the first time a very... sensitive part of his anatomy met Dejah Thoris' eggshell laying apparatus?
On the other hand such... discreet morphology would not allow to easily answer this intriguing question: since Green Martians have two pairs of arms, do their males have two pairs of... well, never mind  .

Now,if interplanetary travel is too much for you, you well set such adventures on the newly discovered continent of Mu in the Pacific ocean.

This allowing to your expeditionary corps in tricorne to meet 'interesting 'natives, some as least as technologically advanced as themselves.

To prevent any cataclysmic 'butterfly effect' of 'advanced' technologies (skyships, specially) spreading out of it, just suppose that a geostationary hole in the ozone layer happens to allow aether winds to reach the ground there and there only: 'lightwood' receives its anti-g capacity from them. Actually, it's the constant bombardment of the soil by aether winds for millions of years which transmuted selenium into cavorium (the salts of which form cavorite): the 'Lighwood bush' accumulates cavorium in its cell walls just like other plants accumulate selenium or silicium 8-)

Not far, and probably with interesting ideas: 1812 - Napoleon on Mars
http://napoleononmars.blogspot.fr/
http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=281364
"Basically the idea is to take inspiration from the battles between the British and French in India and Egypt and transfer them to a Barsoom-like Mars and have fun doing so." : as a tricorne aficionado let me stress that there were more, and larger, battles between the British and French in India during the WAS - SYW! :D

Not irrelevant, and possibly inspirational for Space 1745:
- a skyship with crew in Napoleonic shakos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGoI5qJM2A8
- the French comics 'Empire': in 1815 Napoleon and Wellington fight for the control of India; with steamtanks, dirigibles, a Babbage engine… Good ideas but awful drawings(machines are ratherwell done, but you can recognize a character from an image to the next only by the clothes -and only because of the colors)!

About Martians, the new Red Planet Minis http://redplanetminiatures.blogspot.co.uk/ are *hooved*
Image
Since they currently offer no female, I'll not miss such an opportunity to point out that the Raging Heroes Praying Mantis http://www.ragingheroes.com/collections/complete-collection/products/preying-mantis also have hooves, and thus can be used as female warriors -supposing an extreme sexual dimorphism as in Burroughs' Opar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opar_%28fictional_city%29#In_Burroughs
Image

On the other hand, for some reason I'm less convinced by the Raging Heroes SF Blood Vestals
Image
Image
Not bad by themselves, but not Barsoomian enough for my taste - 200% personal, of course.
