The Red Man
... the Elector Spiritual was deeply amused when he heard of the nickname. It came of course from his dress, perhaps for a part from the new flag he devised for Witzboldfeld; but to him he has a deeper, and quite fitting, meaning.
When in Monte-Cristo he had watched a play of the old Britton legend of "Korydwen and the Red Rider from Kenholl"
(twice: first in French http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQtoxSFhV8M
then in Brezhoneg
to enjoy the 'music' of the original text). And had it knowledgeably commented: Monte-Cristans are extremely fond of old legends, and not only of those from their rich folk lore http://mcristobylacew-abdul666.blogspot.fr/2007/08/whos-who-in-monte-cristo.html#sir%C3%A8ne
-they favor cultural ecumenism http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0jfWbN7GLQ / http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8g1kJ3mmgo&t=66s
. Thus he learned that in the Celtic tradition the 'Red Man' comes from the (Pagan) 'Other-World' and thus belongs not 'not-Christianity', to what the scholar Poul Anderson called 'Chaos' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Hearts_and_Three_Lions
to avoid a 'prejudiced' word such as 'Evil' used by his colleague Clifford Simak http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1249876.Where_the_Evil_Dwells
And indeed, while his Christian faith (now of a very tolerant kind) cannot be doubted, did not the Cardinal come back from the Old World -from straight indeed Pangaean feet, actually- with ideas that the conservative types can fear as a source of chaos? Has not he started to raise Hell? Thus, had mused the Elector Spiritual, the nickname is far more appropriate than its authors can imagine.
And when it come to international affairs the ruler of Witzboldfeld indeed support 'chaos' as championed by the legendary heroin Raven http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angus_Wells#Raven
(and, oddly, in the tradition of another Continent by another 'larger than life' female character, the Grey Witch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Record_of_Lodoss_War_characters#Karla_The_Grey_Witch
): far better to have a number of relatively weak States than one or two super-power(s). The Elector Spiritual's most immediate concern is obviously that Witzboldfeld stands between the two parts of Enteburg. This allows, of course, to collect taxes on the trade between the two disconnected parts of Elector's Donal's lands, but these have to be kept at an insanely low rate not to irritate the powerful 'hammer and anvil' neighbor. So indeed the Elector Spiritual appreciates that Enteburg has several other -powerful and 'restless'- neighbors. More generally, he he is convinced that a dominating State enforces -not only in conquered lands, but also in 'free' country under its influence- its own language, political and societal model, way of life / worldview, committing, not a genocide indeed, but a series of cultural ethnocides. And the Elector Spiritual is firmly convinced than diversity is richer than uniformity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFVdvXGIT34
